Product Info

Umbrella type lightning rod Paracatch

Umbrella type lightning rod Paracatch

Features
1. Wider lightning protection area
This product has a wider lightning protection area that could not be fully covered with conventional methods (needle type lightning rods).
2. Protects against side strikes
The rotating sphere design affords protection against side-on lightning strikes, which are normally difficult to protect against.

3. Patent applied for
The product can also be combined with Sankosha’s lightning protection system.
4. Specifications
Height: 1.8m, protection range: max. 5m horizontal radius, weight: approx. 120kg, wind pressure strength: wind speed 60m, main material: stainless steel

5. Registered as NETIS (New Technology Information System) for use in public works projects, etc.
The product has been registered as a new technology under the NETIS scheme run by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Kanto Regional Development Bureau.

The antennae of wireless relay stations and the like are conventionally protected from direct lightning strikes by needle type lightning rods. The protection zone is specified by the angle method in IECA4201 (1992), and they are usually designed and fitted so that there is no risk of lightning strike within an angle of 60ºC (45ºC for hazardous materials, etc.).

However, as research advanced, it became clear that it would be difficult to protect equipment against lightning using the conventional angle method alone, and in 2003 the IEC standard was revised to incorporate the rotating sphere and mesh methods currently recommended by IEC standards, and calling for an appropriate angle method to be used in accordance with the height of the structure to be protected. The umbrella type Paracatch lightning rod is practically the same height as an ordinary lightning rod, and has been developed to apply the new IEC standards to the antennae of wireless relay stations, etc., and features a structure like an open umbrella, which very effectively captures lightning.

Furthermore, Paracatch uses polymer isolaters for insulation and, when combined with a lightning protection system, is very effective in trapping lightning current and dispersing it safely.
